When Kindness Becomes Powerful: The Story of Dorcas

Based on Acts 9:36–42

The salty, warm breeze from the sea blew through the open windows in the little coastal town of Joppa. It was late afternoon, and the fish markets were almost closed. Seagulls screeched overhead.

In a quiet house near the harbour lived a woman named Dorcas. Everyone in town knew her. When her name was mentioned, people smiled. She was the kind of woman people trusted and wanted to sit next to. Whenever she walked into a room, it felt like the air became lighter.

Dorcas was a believer and follower of Jesus. She didn’t just say she loved God—she showed it.

She visited widows who had no one. She sewed beautiful tunics, coats, and warm clothes for women and girls who couldn’t afford anything. She gave food, she prayed with people, and she listened—really listened. She wasn’t rich. She just used what she had. That was her ministry.

One sad week, Dorcas became very sick. No one understood why or how it happened. There were herbs, prayers, cool cloths, and tears. But one day the house fell completely silent… and Dorcas died.

The room was filled with grief. The widows cried. Everyone felt like their light had been snuffed out.

They washed her body with gentle hands and lavender-scented oil. Then they placed her upstairs in a quiet room.

But the believers were not ready to give up.

They heard the apostle Peter was in a town not too far away—Lydda. Two men rushed there, dust in their eyes, sweat drying on their skin from running in the sun.

“Please,” they begged. “Come quickly.”

Peter came back with them.

Inside the house, the upstairs room was crowded. The widows showed Peter the clothes Dorcas had made for them—tunics, cloaks, shawls. You could almost feel the love stitched into every seam. The women cried, holding the fabric close to their faces.

Peter asked everyone to leave the room.

He knelt down on the floor beside Dorcas and prayed.

The room was still.

Then Peter turned toward her lifeless body and said:

“Tabitha, get up.”

Her eyes opened.

She breathed.

And she sat up.

Peter helped her stand.

When he led her out to the others, the widows gasped. Then they squealed with joy. Then they laughed and cried at the same time. People hugged each other; some dropped to their knees in shock.

The whole town heard the news.

Dorcas—alive again.

And because of this miracle, many believed in Jesus.
