Character Profile: Miriam

  1. Worship Leader & Prophetess
Miriam was the first woman in the Bible called a prophetess (Exodus 15:20). After God parted the Red Sea, she led the Israelite women in worship, dancing, and praise with tambourines—boldly celebrating God’s power.
  2. Protective Big Sister
As a young girl, Miriam watched over baby Moses when he was placed in a basket in the Nile. She bravely approached Pharaoh’s daughter and offered to find a nurse for him—showing courage and wisdom even as a child.
  3. Struggled with Jealousy and Gossip
Later in life, Miriam let jealousy and pride creep into her heart. She and Aaron criticized Moses for marrying a Cushite woman and questioned his leadership. Her gossip displeased God, and she faced a serious consequence—leprosy.
  4. Redeemed and Remembered
Though Miriam made mistakes, she is still remembered as a leader, worshipper, and woman of faith. Her story is a reminder that God forgives and that words matter—especially when they come from leaders.

BIBLE READING

I would love for you to open your bibles in Numbers 12: 9-15 (ERV)

The anger of the Lord burned against them, and he left them.

10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam’s skin was leprous—it became as white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease, 11 and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.”

13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “Please, God, heal her!”

14 The Lord replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” 15 So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back.

STORY

“WHITE AS SNOW – THE STORY OF MIRIAM”

The desert air was dry and still, but tension crackled louder than a sandstorm.

Miriam stood just outside the tent, arms folded, heart pounding in her chest.

“I don’t understand why he married her,” she whispered harshly to Aaron, her voice laced with bitterness. “A Cushite woman? Really? Moses—our little brother—chosen by God… and now he’s acting like he can do whatever he wants.”

Aaron frowned. “It doesn’t feel right, Miriam. We’ve followed the same God. We’ve led these people, too. Why is he the only one who gets to speak for God?”

Their words slithered through the air like snakes—sharp, subtle, poisonous.

But someone else was listening.

Not Moses.

God.

Later that evening, Miriam sat by the fire, still fuming, her thoughts spinning in circles.

Why was she feeling this way? Was it jealousy? Hurt? Left out?

“I’ve sung songs that brought nations to tears,” she muttered to herself, staring into the flames. “I held Moses when he was just a baby… I watched the Red Sea split wide open… and now I’m nothing?”

A sudden, blinding flash of light exploded across the camp. A sound like thunder shook the ground.

“Miriam! Aaron!” came a booming voice.

It wasn’t Moses.

It wasn’t anyone human.

It was God.

Trembling, Miriam and Aaron stepped toward the Tent of Meeting—the sacred place where God spoke.

A thick cloud hovered above it. Divine. Powerful. Terrifying.

And then… God spoke.

“Why were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?” the voice echoed like rolling thunder. “He is faithful. I speak to him face to face, not in dreams or riddles.”

The silence afterward was deafening.

And then the cloud vanished.

But what was left behind sent a scream ripping through the camp.

Miriam collapsed to the ground. Her skin… was white. Snow white.

It was like watching life being drained from her. Leprosy.

Her hands were cracked, her face pale and covered in white blotches.

She gasped. “What’s happening to me?!”

Aaron’s face turned ghostly. “Miriam…” he choked, falling to his knees. “Dear God, no.”

He turned to Moses, who had just come running. “Please, brother! Don’t hold our foolishness against us! We were wrong—we sinned! Please, pray for her!”

Moses didn’t hesitate. His voice broke with love and pain.

O God, please heal her… please!

But God replied, “If her father had spit in her face, would she not be shamed for seven days? Let her be confined outside the camp. After seven days, she may return.”

And just like that… Miriam—once a leader, a prophetess, a woman of strength—was cast out.

Alone.

Her tent stood far beyond the borders. The silence of the desert wrapped around her, but it was nothing compared to the silence inside her own heart.

There were no songs on her lips now.

Just sorrow.

Seven days passed.

Seven days of shame.

Seven days of thinking.

Seven days of remembering the power of her words—how they tore down instead of lifted up.

Seven days of listening to her heart—really listening.

On the eighth day, she stepped back into the camp. Still pale, but healing. Not just in skin—but in spirit.

The people watched her quietly. Not in disgust. Not in fear.

But in awe.

She had been wrong.

She had gossiped.

She had let jealousy burn brighter than love.

But God… had mercy.

And from that day on, Miriam knew:

Your words can build—or they can break.

And even when we mess up terribly…

God still wants us back.
