It all started in the group chat.

The buzz was about Tyler—the new youth leader everyone was talking about. He was smart, kind, and had that calm, prayerful energy that made people actually listen when he spoke.

And apparently… he had a girlfriend now.

Not just any girl.

Someone completely new to the youth group. Quiet. From a different school. Didn’t even post much on socials.

“I seriously don’t get it,” Mia typed, lying on her bed with her phone glowing against her hoodie. “Why her?”

She sent the message and stared at the screen, waiting.

Ding.

Her best friend, Lexi, replied.
“She doesn’t even serve at youth. You’ve been on the worship team since you were like, 12. He should be dating you.”

Mia smirked. It felt good to be seen.

But deep down… something didn’t feel right.

She’d always been close to Tyler—maybe not dating-close—but they’d had deep talks, shared ideas for youth nights, and prayed together after tough weeks. She was one of the leaders, and now? It was like she didn’t matter.

Mia didn’t realise it yet, but her heart was already growing bitter.

The next day at school, the whispers started. Someone had seen the new girl and Tyler together at the smoothie shop after youth. By lunch, half the youth group knew.

Mia rolled her eyes in the hallway. “It’s just weird,” she said to Lexi, loud enough for others to hear. “One minute he’s preaching about being led by God, and the next he’s dating someone no one even knows.”

What she didn’t know… was that Tyler heard.

And more importantly… God heard.

That night, Mia tossed and turned in bed. She scrolled through old photos—worship team pics, youth camps, moments where she felt seen and important.

Now she felt… invisible. Replaced.

She closed her eyes, trying to pray—but all she could hear was her own voice from earlier.

“Why her?”

“I deserve to be noticed.”

“I’m better than her.”

Suddenly, Mia felt a strange heaviness. Not on her chest, but deep in her heart.

Like something had gone numb.

Her chest tightened. She couldn’t cry. She couldn’t even pray properly. Her heart felt… cold. As if something inside had been covered in ice.

She opened her Bible randomly, desperate.

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow…” – Isaiah 1:18

And she knew.

It wasn’t about the other girl.

It wasn’t about Tyler.

It was her own jealousy… her gossip… her pride.

She had used her voice to tear down, not build up.

She had let comparison poison her heart.

And she was ashamed.

For the next week, Mia pulled back. Not to avoid people—but to talk to God. Really talk. She journaled. She cried. She even drafted a message to the girl she had talked about.

“I’m really sorry. I judged you. I let my feelings get in the way of kindness. I hope we can start over.”

And to her surprise… the girl replied.

“Thank you. That means a lot. I was honestly nervous about coming to youth, but I’m glad you reached out.”

Seven days of reflection changed everything.

Mia came back to youth the next Friday. Not with a spotlight on her. Not with people cheering.

But with peace.

She smiled when she saw Tyler and his girlfriend talking. Not a fake smile—a real one.

Because now she understood:

Your voice can tear someone down—or call someone higher.

And even when we mess up—badly—God still wants us back.

He isn’t keeping score. He’s waiting with love.

This week, take some time to ask:

  • Who have I hurt with my words?
  • Where has jealousy or pride taken root in my heart?
  • What would it look like to make things right—and trust God with the rest?
