STORY

Jezabel & Ahab Modern Story – Jayla  & Ashton

Ashton blinked again, waiting for his phone screen to light up. Nothing.
He thought back to the last few hours. He was sure he hadn’t done anything to upset her.

“Chill, man. Stop staring at your phone,” his best friend Eli said, looking slightly annoyed beside him.

Ashton pretended to look elsewhere, but his heart hammered in his chest. They just didn’t get it. Wait until they saw her!

Suddenly, his anguished heart soared as the light on his phone flashed. She had arrived.

Racing out the door of his home, Ashton almost tripped over himself, making sure he didn’t keep her waiting.

And there she was, stepping out of the sleek black BMW sports car her parents had gifted her for graduation.

Sleek and beautiful—just like her. She was everything anyone could wish for. She looked like a model straight out of a magazine, and she was here for him!

The slight movement of her lips showed she was happy he’d come out to greet her.

“Jayla, so glad you could make it. Come in and meet my friends,” Ashton grinned, taking her slim, smooth, manicured hand in his.

“It’s not going to be a church thing, right?” Jayla’s tense voice asked as she slightly pulled back her hand.

“No, no,” Ashton hastened to assure her. “It’s just a party with some people I go to church with—but no church stuff,” he promised.

The slight movement of her lips showed he’d answered correctly.

Ashton smiled and pulled her along.

That evening, Ashton remembered every detail of the party. He was fairly happy with how everything had turned out. Jayla had been happy, and there had only been one close incident—when Eli had started to say something about God and church—but Ashton had quickly put an end to it by pushing him into the pool.

Eli would get over it. Besides, Jayla had laughed, and that was music to Ashton’s ears.

Eli was a big boy. He knew Ashton was just mucking around.

The ding on Ashton’s phone announced a message had come through.

Looking at the brightened screen, Ashton held his breath as he read who it was from—Jayla.

Opening it, he grinned widely. Jayla was inviting him to a family get-together the following weekend. It was a church day, but Jayla was more important. Church was always there, and everything was always the same. He knew that getting invited to a family event was a big deal, and he would do anything to keep Jayla happy. This would most likely secure her as his girlfriend.

Ashton inspected the roses again to make sure they were still perfect. His one-year anniversary with Jayla was today, and he wanted her to have her favourite flowers to accompany his gift.

Despite being happy with his purchase, Ashton felt a dark cloud settling over his mood. He hated that Nixon one of the guys at school, was such a boring goody two-shoes.

Ashton was in such a sour, pouting mood that he didn’t hear Jayla approach the table until she cleared her throat.

Jumping to his feet, Ashton greeted her with a kiss and pulled out her chair.

“Jayla,” he smiled, “Happy Anniversary,” then handed her the roses and the jewellery box.

Her smile was gift enough—and confirmation that he had chosen the right present.

“Why are you unhappy?” Jayla finally spoke as she clasped the bracelet in place. Her green, cat-like eyes assessed him closely.

Ashton sighed and tilted his head.

“Nixon refuses to let me use his yacht for our anniversary party celebration this weekend. I’ve tried everything, but he said he isn’t going to let me rent it because we’re going to be drinking and stuff—and he doesn’t believe in that,” Ashton confessed, frustrated.

He waited for Jayla to join him in his anger, but when nothing happened, he finally looked at her.

Why was she smiling?

“Happy Anniversary, Ash,” Jayla said, handing him a key.

“I don’t understand?” Ashton admitted, feeling annoyed at his ignorance.

“Ash, you want to have a party on the yacht—and you will have a party on the yacht,” Jayla grinned before continuing.

“It seems Nixon broke his legs last night and is in hospital. He won’t be in any position to be on his property for the next few days. The yacht is yours for your party.”

Ashton swallowed, then grinned as he leaned in to kiss his gorgeous girlfriend.
