Joaquin the Bully

ii

Life in the little shed behind the white church wasn’t easy for the family. They had escaped their home country because of the war and found safety in a quiet village. But even in this peaceful place, they still faced challenges.

There was a man named Joaquín who lived nearby. He wasn’t kind and often bullied the family. Every day Joaquín would yell at the family as he passed by, hurling insults and threats that made the girls tremble with fear. They even spotted him lurking in their backyard one day, though he fled before anyone could confront him. All the neighbours warned them to be careful around him.

The daughters, Maria and Sofia, were particularly afraid of Joaquín. His loud voice and angry presence haunted their thoughts, and they worried about what he might do. But their parents always reassured them, reminding them of God’s protection. “Stay close,” their father would say, “and trust in God. He watches over us.”

Late one afternoon as the father was finishing his work in the field, the girls saw Joaquín approach screaming and yelling mean, rude and hurtful things. They huddled together and watched from afar, knowing that they couldn’t do anything to help their father, who stood alone in front of the bully without saying anything.

That night, the family gathered in their tiny shed and prayed. They asked God for peace, for protection from Joaquín, and for relief from the constant fear.

Early the next morning, their father went to the large empty field next to their shed. Hi job was to keep the area clean. He didn’t have a lawnmower, so each week he would go out with a manual grass cutter and thoroughly chop the grass by hand. It was exhausting work, but they couldn’t afford anything better.

Day by day, he would clear the yard, sweat dripping down his brow as he worked to make their humble home a little neater.

One afternoon, after finally finishing the lawn, José, the father, was resting with a cup of water when Joaquín suddenly appeared. His usual scowl was fixed on his face, but something about his attitude was different this time.

“Look, Mister,” Joaquín said, his voice a bit shaky as he pointed a finger at José. “I want to ask you something.”

José looked up. “Yes?”

“Who is that big man who has started working with you in the field this week?”

José blinked in confusion. “Man? There’s no one but me.”

Joaquín rolled his eyes in frustration. “The man! Every time you’ve been cleaning this week, he’s been right there, working alongside you. I see him every day.”

José handed the empty cup of water to Rosa, his wife, and wiped his face with his sleeve. “I’m not sure what you mean,” he said, trying to stay calm.

Joaquín pointed to the field again, his eyes darting nervously. “The man. Is he your brother? I don’t like him. He scares me.”

Maria and Sofia, who had been listening nearby, exchanged shocked glances. Joaquín’s voice lowered to a whisper as he continued. “I’m terrified of him. He uses a huge machete to clear the field. The blade is enormous!” He gestured violently with his hands.

José stood in stunned silence for a moment. Finally, he spoke, his voice trembling with emotion. “Yes, he is my brother,” he said simply.

Joaquín went pale. He trembled and took a step back, terror all over his face. Without another word, he turned and fled down the field, disappearing down the road as fast as his legs could carry him.

When Joaquín was gone, the family stood in silence, tears in their eyes. God had answered their prayers. He had sent His angel to stand in the field, protecting José as he worked. Joaquín had seen him, though the man in the field was invisible to everyone else. They knew without a doubt that God was watching over them.
