You can find the story in your bibles in Jeremiah chapter 38

The sun was beginning to set – casting a warm orange glow over the ancient city of Jerusalem. The streets were busy, filled with people returning home after a long day.
But the prophet Jeremiah, known for delivering messages from God, was not among them. Instead, he stood in the courtyard of the palace, surrounded by angry faces.
Jeremiah’s heart pounded in his chest. He had just delivered God’s message to the people, warning them to turn back to the Lord or face destruction.
But the people didn’t want to hear it. The rulers of the city, feeling threatened by his words, decided they had heard enough of Jeremiah’s warnings.
“We can’t let him keep speaking like this,” one of the officials said angrily. “He needs to be silenced!”

So they captured him – they wanted him gone!
The officials grabbed him roughly and they dragged him toward an old, dark pit in the courtyard, used long ago to store water but now filled with only mud at the bottom.
The pit loomed before him, deep and dark, and Jeremiah could feel fear rising inside him. What would happen to him down there? Would anyone rescue him? He looked up at the darkening sky, whispered a prayer to God, and then, without warning, he was thrown into the pit.

Jeremiah fell into the darkness, landing with a splash in the thick, sticky mud at the bottom. His whole body sank into the mud, and he struggled to find his footing. The walls of the pit were high and slippery, with no way to climb out.
He felt alone, cold, and scared. Would this be the end? The mud stuck to him, heavy and thick, making it hard to move.
Suddenly, he heard something—a faint sound, like footsteps above. His heart leapt with hope. He listened carefully. The sound grew closer and closer. Someone was coming!
“Jeremiah! Jeremiah, are you down there?” a voice called from above.
Jeremiah’s heart raced with relief. It was Ebed Melec! He was one of the king’s servants, a kind man who believed in God.

“I’m here!” Jeremiah called back, his voice weak.
Ebed-Melec had heard what happened to Jeremiah and had gone to the king, begging for his rescue. The king, moved by Ebed Melec’s plea, had allowed him to help.
Ebed Melec looked down into the dark pit and quickly began to lower ropes. “Tie these around yourself, Jeremiah! We’re going to pull you out!”
Jeremiah’s hands trembled as he grasped the ropes. His fingers were slippery with mud, but he managed to tie the ropes around his waist as tightly as he could.

The men above began to pull, and slowly, slowly, Jeremiah felt himself being lifted out of the mud. His heart pounded with relief and gratitude as the walls of the pit moved past him. Finally, Jeremiah emerged into the cool air, gasping as he was lifted free of the pit and took a deep breath of fresh air. He was free!

As Jeremiah walked away from the pit, he felt the strength of God’s presence with him. Even in the darkest of the pit, God had been there. Jeremiah knew that no matter what happened, God would always be with him, guiding him and protecting him, just as He had promised.
